Château of Fénelon

The birthplace of the famous author during the reign of Louis the 14th
Overlooking the Dordogne valley from its rocky spur, the fortress has kept its defensive outer walls and its lauze stone roofs typical of the Sarladais area intact. An exhibit retracing Fénelon's rise and fall at the court of Louis the 14th is a moving tribute to the famous author of The Adventures of Telemachus in his birth place. Remarkable collections of arms and furniture from the 15th to the 19th century. Remarkable collections of arms and furniture from the 15th to the 19th century. Private and lived-in site.

  • chateau de Fénelon exposition permanente
Permanent exhibit on the life and works of Fenelon
    from 01/04/2018 to 31/10/2018

Discover the author of the famous Adventures of Telemachus, and how he went from this castle to a life of glory at the court of Louis the 14th, the Sun King. Too free in spirit and too opposed to the idea of absolute monarchy, he finally incurred the king’s wrath and fell into disfavour. However, he left behind him a considerable wealth of texts which influenced European political and philosophical scene for a long time afterwards.
All the artefacts, etchings, books and documents on show are from the castle’s private archives and collections. In 2018, the Ministry of Culture rewarded this initiative by giving the Chateau de Fenelon its Maisons des Illustres certification label.
